Epilepsy is a disorder of the central nervous system involving abnormal brain activity that causes seizures or episodes of unusual behavior, sensations, and/or loss of awareness.
Signs and Symptoms of Epilepsy
Because epilepsy is caused by abnormal brain activity, seizures can affect any process that your brain coordinates.
Epileptic symptoms often vary among patients and may include:
- Temporary confusion
- A staring spell
- Violent muscle contractions and uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs
- Loss of consciousness or awareness
- Fear, anxiety, or déjà vu
