Five Tips To Help You With Multiple Sclerosis Treatment

August 18, 2022

Multiple Sclerosis

About one million American adults have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, or MS. This progressively debilitating neurological condition impacts the central nervous system and myelin sheaths, which protect nerve cells. If you have MS, you must pursue the best care possible with your neurologist.

Here are five tips to help you with your comprehensive treatment.

Managing Symptoms Of MS

Whether you have primary progressive MS or relapsing MS, symptom management is key to living your fullest life possible with the least amount of symptoms. Common medications can be administered orally or via IV. These medications aim for fewer bowel symptoms, better sexual function, and less muscle stiffness and spasms, along with improved energy and mood.

In addition to medications, treatment for MS includes lifestyle changes and tools to improve mobility, independence, and self-confidence. Here are some tips you may wish to incorporate into your everyday plan to live well with MS.

Most likely, your care plan will look different over time as your disease changes, so be sure to note carefully any new symptoms or what therapies and treatments work (or don’t work) for further symptom management.

Tip #1 Stay as physically active as you can.

Work with your physical therapist to learn exercises that improve muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance. Also, pursue household tasks and hobbies that incorporate light physical activity and give you a feeling of accomplishment. Cooking and gardening are just two examples. Also, be sure to sharpen your mental processes with reading, conversation, games, and more.

Tip #2 Eat a high-fiber, low-carb diet.

Proper nutrition controls your weight, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels. Fiber really helps maintain regular bowel and bladder habits.

Tip #3 Stop all tobacco and alcohol

Alcohol interferes with nerve function. While tobacco does not cause MS, cigarettes can worsen your symptoms. Ask your PCP about a smoking cessation program to kick the habit once and for all and benefit from better health.

Tip #4 Keep a positive mental attitude.

If MS makes you feel depressed or anxious, tell your doctor. Talk therapy and MS support groups are just two ways people stay ahead of mental health issues and stay positive. Your doctor can offer different ways for you to feel better and have a more positive outlook while living with MS.

Tip #5 Be open about your condition.

Your family and friends can be real allies in your fight against MS. So, be sure these significant others understand what MS is and how it may impact your day to day life. They can offer a helping hand when you need it, as well as advice and encouragement to stay positive and healthy.
